Style and philosophy of investment management

Whilst there are many styles of investment management, they basically fall into two categories; absolute return and market driven.  The first seeks to produce a positive return, often over risk free cash interest rates, irrespective of market direction.  The latter seeks to produce a return that matches, or is superior to, a selected benchmark (s) e.g. FTSE100, FTA World etc.  Both categories can incorporate a wide range of investments to achieve diversification of risk.  Clients need to determine which approach best suits their needs.

The next stage is to decide upon the philosophy of the manager.  Some discretionary managers follow a philosophy of investing into vehicles that mirror the market (passive) whereas others seek to achieve performance by selecting individual investments they believe will outperform the market (active).
