Fairbairn Private Bank expands discretionary investment management service
5 March 2012
Fairbairn Private Bank has widened access to its discretionary
investment management service with the inclusion of a range of
collective investment funds. The funds will be available for
a smaller initial investment of £7,500 and will follow the same
investment strategies as the bank's well established segregated
scheme, for portfolios in excess of £500,000. They will
provide a suitable option for long-term savings plans such as ISAs
and pensions.
The bank's discretionary investment management service has grown
rapidly since it was first established a little over six years ago
and now offers a range of risk-rated portfolios that can be
denominated in sterling, dollar and euro. Since inception, each of
the portfolio models has maintained consistent performance despite
the volatile economic conditions. The sterling medium-high risk
multi-asset class strategy has returned a cumulative performance of
27.81%* since its inception six years ago, which compares
favourably with the ARC Sterling Steady Growth PCI** which returned
19.34% over the same period. The sterling global bond
strategy which was launched three years ago* has returned a
cumulative performance of 26.83%* since its inception, against the
ARC Sterling Cautious PCI** of 17.14%.
The new collective investment funds solution is managed by the
bank's sister company, Nedgroup Investments (IOM) Limited (NGI),
and the Fairbairn Private Bank team remain actively involved in the
investment process through membership of the NGI Investment
Strategy Committee. Known as the Nedgroup Investments MultiFunds
plc, the funds offer alternative access to the bank's discretionary
investment strategies through the purchase of shares in collective
investment schemes. The Nedgroup Investments MultiFund is an
open-ended investment company (OEIC) which is UCITS IV compliant
and recognised by the FSA, meaning it is highly regulated.
Senior members of the Fairbairn Private Bank team are members of
the NGI Investment Strategy Committee, which is the body
responsible for asset allocation across all international mandates.
This committee has recently been strengthened by the appointment of
Andrew Yeadon who joins as head of investments - London from
Schroder Investment Management, where he headed up its
multi-manager team.
Greg Horton, managing director of Fairbairn Private Bank, said:
"There is now incredible flexibility across our range of investment
services. The launch of the fund solution means we can now offer
alternative ways to access our global discretionary investment
management service - segregated, for larger investments, and now a
collective investment scheme, which can provide attractive taxation
advantages for certain investors of all sizes, while also
permitting access to our award-winning discretionary investment
management services for investors with a smaller initial investment
requirement. The collective investment scheme also provides a
facility to make regular top ups, which is ideal for long-term
savers who wish to make regular, periodic contributions into, for
example, pensions and ISAs.
"As asset managers our focus is to deliver attractive
risk-adjusted returns over the long term and our highly-experienced
private banking team work alongside professional intermediaries and
assist them in obtaining the most appropriate investment option for
their client needs. Having won Best International Wealth Provider
for the third year running in the Professional Adviser
International Fund and Product Awards 2011, we are driven to
continue developing and expanding our portfolio of services in
order to offer the investor the widest choice of investment options
possible."
There are three sub-funds available in both sterling and dollar
share classes: Income, Balanced and Growth, which ensure access to
the widest possible range of underlying investments. The sterling
share class is also hedged in order to minimise the impact of
fluctuations in exchange rates.

* Performance figures quoted are as at 31 January 2012. The
sterling medium-high risk strategy was launched 30 September 2005.
The sterling global bond strategy was launched November 2008. The
composite performance of these strategies is calculated by
weighting the returns from all actual fee-paying discretionary
portfolios managed to the same strategy by beginning market values
and time-weighted cash flows. Net returns are net of investment
management fees on an accrued basis; and custody, administrative
fees, trading expenses and non-reclaimable withholding taxes on a
paid basis.
**ARC PCI is a set of risk-based indices designed to be used by
private clients and their advisers in assessing the performance of
any discretionary portfolio with a non-specialist mandate. There
are four PCI series for each currency, designed specifically for
investors with either US dollar, euro or sterling as their
reference currency. These cover the following risk categories: ARC
Cautious PCI; ARC Balanced Asset PCI; ARC Steady Growth PCI and ARC
Equity Risk PCI.
