New recycling scheme at Fairbairn Private Bank

THINK BEFORE YOU BIN AT FAIRBAIRN
PRIVATE BANK
Fairbairn Private Bank has introduced a new
recycling scheme at its offices in St Mary’s Court, Hill Street and
is hoping to inspire other companies to take action. The bank will
now recycle glass, aluminium and plastic and St Mary’s Court
property management company, Catalina Property Managers, have
supported the scheme by allocating space for the recycling
cage.
This latest recycling initiative will boost
the current efforts already in operation at the bank, which
includes recycling paper, composting biodegradable waste such as
teabags and turning off appliances at the end of the day. The bank
also works in collaboration with various charities to recycle used
toner and printer cartridges, used stamps and old mobile phones. In
addition, the bank embraces any means, electronic or otherwise, of
minimising paper usage and reducing its carbon footprint and
encourages clients to sign up for online account viewing where
printed statements are not necessary.
Recently released recycling facts and
figures* have inspired staff at the bank to take action. Shocking
figures have calculated the decomposition rate of aluminium at 300
years, plastic at up to 500 years and glass will never decompose.
Businesses and residents of the Isle of Man are responding to the
problem and there is a welcome increase in the number of recycling
facilities on-island, such as a glass recycling facility at
Corlett’s quarry in Peel, where glass is recycled into patio paving
flags, and organic peat free compost produced by Ballanevan in St
Johns. These examples of how the island is adopting fresh
approaches to recycling has encouraged staff at the bank to get
involved in the new recycling scheme.
The bank is keen to follow the example set
by parent company, Old Mutual, which recognises that it has an
impact on the environment, both directly through the running of its
offices and indirectly through meeting the investment needs of its
clients. As such, the bank has been pursuing a number of ‘green’
initiatives, most recently in its Jersey office collaborating with
Style Office, who recycled the bank’s old office furniture due to a
change of office premises in Jersey.
Comments Greg Horton, Managing Director at
the bank, ”Until long-term technological and cultural solutions to
the problem of global warming are found, we all need to consider
our impact on the environment. The bank is proud to raise its game
and make a greater environmental contribution through this
initiative. We will strive to make this latest project a
success for the benefit of both current and future
generations.”
