Fairbairn Private Bank first to recycle office furniture

FAIRBAIRN PRIVATE BANK’S FURNITURE
SETS SAIL TO UK FOR RECYCLING
Fairbairn Private Bank has become the first
company in Jersey to make full use of a newly introduced recycling
scheme for office furniture. To coordinate its recent move to new
premises in St Helier, the bank commissioned Jersey based Style
Office to supply all new office furniture and to provide move
management services. As part of the service, Style suggested the
old, unwanted furniture could be sent to the UK for recycling and
the bank welcomed this opportunity to do its bit for the
environment.
Apparently, the average office worker ‘owns’
approximately 0.25 tonnes of office furniture including desk,
chair, storage and a share of meeting room and reception
furniture. If this is prevented from being disposed of in a
landfill, approximately 375kg of carbon would be saved from being
released into the atmosphere. If the office furniture from an
office of 100 workers were to be recycled, then approximately 37.5
tonnes of “locked in” carbon emissions could be saved.
The new Jersey scheme is run in conjunction
with UK furniture recycling specialists, Green-works, which is a
not for profit organisation that processes, reuses and recycles
unwanted office furniture as it depots in London and around the
country. Green-works accepts all office furniture, in any
condition, including chairs, notice boards, desks, safes, pictures,
fire extinguishers, lamps, heaters and even waste bins. The
company guarantees that nothing ends up in landfill; what cannot be
reused is recycled. Reusable furniture is refurbished or
remanufactured and sold at very low rates to charities, schools,
community groups and hospitals. In addition, Green-works
provides employment and training opportunities for disadvantaged
groups, as well as creating jobs in deprived areas.
Fairbairn Private Bank, which moved recently
to its new premises at Fairbairn House, 31 The Esplanade, thought
the scheme was such a great idea it did not hesitate in
volunteering to become the first company to make use of the
recycling initiative. In addition to the environmental benefits of
the scheme, Style Office donates £250, for every container of
furniture shipped, to Jersey Hospice, a charity also supported by
the bank.
David Stearn, Head of Private Banking at
Fairbairn Private Bank, commented: “This initiative is the first of
its kind in Jersey and provides the business community on the
Island with a fantastic opportunity to take a lead in recycling. We
knew that our old furniture would not be suitable for the new
offices and therefore we were keen to find an environmentally
friendly way to dispose of it. What better way than to
recycle the furniture and in the process help various UK charities
and good causes. It also provided an additional means to support
our local staff nominated charity, Jersey Hospice.”
The bank is dedicated to considering the
environment in all aspects of its operations and also recycles its
paper, glass, printer cartridges and used stamps to support a range
of charities on the Island.
