TEAM FAIRBAIRN PRIVATE BANK CONQUERS
THE 2009 CAPE EPIC
The Fairbairn Private Bank Cycling Team,
consisting of Guy Veysey and Rohan Kennedy, successfully completed
the 2009 Absa Cape Epic last month. The Cape Epic is arguably the
hardest mountain bike stage race in the world, attracting a field
of 1200 riders, of which more than half are international
competitors. This year’s event followed a new, more technical
route, traversing a distance of almost 700kms and 17000 metres of
climbing over 8 days. Teams consist of two riders who are required
to remain within two minutes of each other at all times during the
race. The Cape Epic attracts immense media attention largely due to
the high number of professional riders taking part. Six film crews
followed the event, and TV coverage was broadcast worldwide after
each stage.
Guy Veysey, a Private Banker in our Cape Town
office, was joined by top South African multisport athlete, Rohan
Kennedy, in Team Fairbairn Private Bank. The Team had been
training extensively for the past six months, and the training
definitely paid off as they finished amongst the top amateurs in
the field. Team FPB was also riding to raise awareness for Endure 4
a child, a charity organisation for underprivileged youth in the
Khayelitsha township of Cape Town.
Not to rest on their laurels, Team FPB
followed up this extreme event three weeks later with a podium
finish at the South African Xterra Championships. This off-road
triathlon event forms part of the Xterra World Series, and this
along with the success of the Cape Epic has placed Fairbairn
Private Bank name firmly on the map amongst the local sporting
fraternity.
