FAIRBAIRN PRIVATE BANK STAFF RAISE £850 FOR BREAST CANCER CARE

Fairbairn Private Bank staff raised £850 for Breast Cancer Care on their ‘In The Pink’ day last Friday (7 November 2008). A variety of fun activities were held during the day, with all funds raised going towards the charity’s important research, campaigning and education work.

The pink day was mostly about fun but also had a serious side. It was particularly poignant as Lesley de Beer, a treasury administrator at the bank, has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Lesley commented, “The whole awareness thing is so important.  Since my diagnosis I have met so many people like me who had no idea they had cancer until it was picked up in a routine mammogram.  The earlier it is detected the better. So it's a good idea to know what to look out for.” Breast cancer awareness posters and flyers were on display for all staff to read.

Three brave volunteers agreed to be waxed if enough money could be raised. The target figure of £200 was quickly smashed as friends and colleagues bid to see their peers go under the wax strip for charity. The professional waxer, courtesy of Carrefour Gym, got to grips first with David Wiseman, investment administrator, and Andrew Wright, payments administrator, who both had their legs waxed. Last but not least was Craig Blenkinsop, head of operations and finance, who went one step further and had his chest waxed. Disappointingly for the crowds, there were very few screams, but lots of flinching. David commented, “It didn’t hurt, it just felt like all my hairs were being pulled out one by one!”

The office was a sea of pink as staff all dressed to impress, with some staff members embracing the pink theme in a pink cowboy hat and pink wigs. Prizes were awarded for the best-dressed, and fundraising activities included a raffle with ‘In The Pink’ hamper prizes, celebrity photo quiz and pink cake sale.

The day culminated with a Pink Party, where everyone let their hair down with pink drinks, a buffet and party music.
