Hints and tips

System requirements

Viewing our pdf's

All documents on this website are available for download as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. Documents in PDF (Portable Document Format) can be displayed in full colour and all pages (or a selection) printed from any computer - Macintosh®, Windows®, DOS, or UNIX® - regardless of the fonts or software programs used to create the original document. If you already have a previous version of Acrobat Reader installed, you may need to upgrade now; this is because all our PDF files are produced using Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional. It is important that you install Acrobat Reader in your browser's PLUGINS folder or directory for it to properly display downloaded PDF documents. With documents that have fairly small type in them, you will probably find it best to re-set Acrobat Reader's on-screen view size to 150% for easier reading.

Java and Flash

Please note: our internet service and interactive access utilises Java script. If you do not have this software, you can download it for free from http://www.java.com/.

A Flash plug-in may be required to view certain graphics on the website. If you do not have this software, you can download it from Adobe Shockwave Download Centre.

Security hints & tips

Choosing your password

A good password:

  • Needn't be a word at all. It can be a combination of letters and numbers
  • Is at least seven characters long. Longer passwords are harder to guess or break
  • Does not contain your user name, real name or company name
  • Contains a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers. However, be aware that some of these punctuation marks may be difficult to enter on foreign keyboards if you are travelling
  • Is changed regularly - we will ask you to change your password every 60 days.

Don't use weak passwords. This means:

  • Using a commonplace dictionary word
  • Something that is easy to work out with a little background knowledge, for example: favourite football team, birthday, spouse's name etc
  • The most common password is 'Password' so thats an obvious one to avoid
  • A password that you have used on your PC system or other websites.

Protect your PC / Update the security software on your PC regularly

  • Use a Firewall - Firewalls keep out some viruses and hackers. A firewall isn't sufficient on its own to guarantee security but it is a good first line of defence
  • Install anti-virus software - Anti-virus software is one of the main defences against online problems. It continually scans for viruses, including trojans and worms. To be effective it must be kept up-to-date
  • Get the latest Windows updates - As new threats emerge, Microsoft updates its Windows operating system and Microsoft Office applications to block them. However, you need to download the updates regularly to be sure of getting maximum protection
  • Stop Spyware - Don't let strangers get inside your computer. There are many different types of spyware and they may result in financial fraud
  • Don't save a document containing information such as passwords on your PC - if someone should steal your PC they will have all the information to access your accounts etc
  • If you do not use Microsoft Windows, see Protect your Mac or Protect your Linux computer.

Fraud alerts

In the past we have been sucessful in closing down several websites designed to look like ours. These websites were created in an effort to lure account holders into divulging confidential information in order to attempt a fraud. This type of fraud has been tried on many banks, both large and small, and is not uncommon. We are taking this matter very seriously and monitoring the internet very carefully.

Our only official website is http://www.fairbairnpb.com/, and this continues to be secure. Get Safe Online offers more information about internet security and how to protect yourself from online fraud.

If you have any concerns regarding this matter, please contact our customer service centre on +44 (0) 1624 645000 between 8am and 8pm (Monday to Friday).
